January 2025 Update

A New Way to Kick off Therapeutic Lessons Brings Impactful Benefits
Renew decided to kick off the first session of therapeutic riding lessons in 2025 in a new and exciting way. Typically, students begin by getting right in the saddle. This time around, students were offered the opportunity to go “behind the scenes” in the new barn and spend quality time on the ground with their horse, instructor, and volunteer team. Students got to see their horse’s stall, feed, groom, and tack their horse, and learn about horse care while exploring the barn. Time on the ground interacting with their horse provides an incredibly valuable time for building relationships, working new muscle groups, strengthening communication, and working on a variety of other goals.
The results of this seemingly minor programming change were even more impactful than we hoped. Students, caregivers, parents, and staff were all blown away by how meaningful this time turned out to be.
“The new barn space was an absolute gift,” Shaina, Renew’s Director of Programs, explained. “We truly wouldn’t have been able to offer so many positive experiences for our participants this week without the new space, and it’s only the FIRST week of these types of offerings!”
This incredible opportunity was felt by many in the Renew family. “I had numerous teachers, parents, and caregivers from group homes express how helpful it was to see the ‘behind the scenes’ in a space that was warm, welcoming, and most importantly accessible,” Shaina added.
We are so grateful for all of the ways the Renew family contributed to making the new, accessible horse barn a reality. We are humbled and excited to see the many ways that God will work in the lives of all who come to the farm in the year ahead!

Celebrating a New Member of the Renew Family

We are celebrating with Elizabeth, Renew’s Volunteer Coordinator, and her husband, David, as they welcomed the arrival of their baby girl, Eloise!
A note from the Turners: “We are proud to announce the birth of our daughter, Eloise. We are all doing great! Miss everyone at Renew already and so grateful for all the ways you’ve supported us thus far!”
Staff Update

Mia Travers has stepped into the role of Interim Volunteer Coordinator during Elizabeth’s maternity leave. Welcome, Mia, and thank you for investing in the mission in this role!
“Growing up, I always had a love for riding and caring for horses. Since starting as a volunteer at Renew this past summer, my love and passion for horses and helping others has become an even bigger part of who I am. My time at Renew has blessed me in so many ways, and I am so thankful for everyone here, humans and horses alike. When I am not at Renew, you can find me hanging out with my husband, Nash, and our two little boys, Corbin and Navy! Or I am probably snuggling our dog Lady, or working on a craft like quilting or crocheting.”

While Amber is probably not a new face for many in the Renew family, her role around the farm is new. Amber stepped into a newly created, interim position during Elizabeth’s maternity leave. She is filling the role of Volunteer Training Associate, and we are excited to see the impact of her efforts.
“Hello! My name is Amber VanDenTop. I have been involved with Renew since the beginning of 2018. I volunteered and then began teaching, earning my CTRI in the spring of 2022. I have been around horses my entire life, showing for 10 years in 4-H and now I am a leader of a local club as well as coach riders to help improve their riding skills. I graduated college in the fall of 2021 with an associates degree in Occupational Therapy, so when I am not around the barn, I am completing home health visits around Michigan. I married my high school sweetheart in August of 2023. We live on the northside of Holland with our two dogs Oakley and Ripple. I am so happy to be back at Renew and excited to help continue educating new volunteers to support what we do with our riders.”
