Help us in welcoming Lark in her new role as Intern for our program! Lark recently graduated with a degree in Recreation Therapy from Calvin College. She will be interning full-time for us until September.
Lark has been volunteering for us throughout her last semester and has grown up around horses. She sought out Renew for an internship as she felt that this setting was the best fit for her in comparison to more of a clinical setting. She enjoys the outdoors and felt this environment fit her personality better.
With her volunteer experience thus far, she has been surprised to see just how many different types of disabilities our therapeutic riding program serves, in addition to the different levels of functioning of the students. She also mentioned that it has been interesting to see how the students respond to the horses. “The students can come to the barn really upset and the horses have a calming effect on them. Most of the time, you can see the student’s calm response right away.”
Throughout this internship Lark hopes to gain more experience working directly with students with disabilities. She is eager to see how her degree and the skills she has learned in the recreational therapy program is applied in this setting and with the populations we serve.
Make sure to introduce yourself and make Lark feel welcome when you are at the barn. We appreciate her time and dedication and are excited to offer her hands-on experience in this field.
